Anti-Termite Treatment for Wood Interiors in Chennai
Termites are a genuine and serious threat to wood interiors in Chennai β not an unlikely scenario, not something that only happens in old buildings, but a risk that affects new apartments, recently renovated homes, and well-maintained properties with equal indifference. Chennai's tropical climate β warm, humid, and rich in the cellulose-containing materials that termites eat β creates conditions where colonies establish and spread rapidly. The cost of a termite infestation in an interior that's 3β5 years old is devastating: structural plywood failure, damaged furniture, and a renovation that costs more than the original installation. Prevention costs a fraction of this. Here's what you need to know.
How Termites Attack Wood Interiors
Subterranean termites (the most common type in Chennai) enter buildings through the soil, through cracks in the foundation, through pipe penetrations, and through direct wood-to-ground contact. They don't need to be visible β they travel inside wood, eating from within, and are often only discovered when the damage is already structural. Drywood termites (less common but present in Chennai) can enter through gaps in finished wood and don't need soil contact. Both types can reduce solid plywood to hollow shell within 18β24 months of infestation.
Anti-Termite Treatment Methods
Pre-construction soil treatment: Chemicals applied to the soil around and under the foundation before construction. This is the builder's responsibility and prevents subterranean termites from entering the structure. For apartments in new buildings, ask your builder specifically whether pre-construction anti-termite soil treatment was done. For resale properties, assume it wasn't and plan accordingly.
Factory-applied wood treatment: All plywood and wood components treated with anti-termite chemical (typically chlorpyrifos or permethrin-based solution) before fabrication. This is what Budget Interiors applies to all carpentry as standard β the treatment is done at our Ambattur factory before the furniture is assembled. It penetrates the wood fibres and creates a long-lasting chemical barrier. This is the most effective approach for furniture because the chemical is in the material, not applied to surfaces after assembly.
Post-installation chemical treatment: Spraying or injecting anti-termite chemical into the soil around the building perimeter and through drilled holes in flooring. This is the treatment applied to existing buildings and is what pest control companies provide. It requires renewal every 5β8 years. Effective for preventing subterranean termite entry but doesn't treat drywood termites inside finished wood.
Borate wood treatment: Boron-based compounds applied to wood surfaces or incorporated into the wood during treatment. Lower toxicity than chlorpyrifos, effective against both subterranean and drywood termites. Increasingly the preferred treatment for furniture-grade applications.
Warning Signs to Watch For in Chennai Homes
Early detection prevents expensive damage. Check for: mud tubes (thin pencil-width tunnels of soil and debris) along walls, cabinet bases, or floor edges β these are the travel corridors subterranean termites construct. Fine powdery frass (termite droppings) on shelves below wooden cabinets or on the floor near wooden elements. Hollow sound when tapping plywood panels β if a solid cabinet face sounds hollow or papery when tapped, termites may have consumed the interior. Visible swarmers (winged termites) appearing after rain β these are reproductives establishing new colonies.
Our Anti-Termite Standard at Budget Interiors
Every piece of carpentry we manufacture β kitchen cabinets, wardrobes, TV units, study tables, pooja units β receives factory anti-termite treatment as a standard, included step, not an optional add-on. We use borate-based treatment for furniture applications and chlorpyrifos-based treatment for structural components. This is disclosed in our project documentation and is backed by our 10-year workmanship warranty. We don't offer it as a premium upgrade because in Chennai, it's a basic requirement.
